In The News Today (October, 9th 2007)
It seems like a good time to resurrect this little item on the blog, seeing as there are a couple of good news items today.
I will try to get this up a little more often, and perhaps instead of every day, just do it every other day, or once a week and have a round up of the best news items
Some of these stories I have been following for a while. This is the case for the first story.
Marion Jones returns Olympic medals
NEW YORK (CNN) — Disgraced track star Marion Jones has returned her Olympic medals after pleading guilty to lying to federal agents about her use of steroids, U.S. Olympic chief Peter Ueberroth said Monday.
“For the record we have received three gold medals and two bronze medals from the attorneys of Marion Jones,” Ueberroth, the chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee, told reporters in Colorado Springs, Colorado. — (read full story)
There is only one thing one can say about this, in my opinion, and that is that it serves her right. She should not have taken that stuff, there’s a word for someone like that: Cheater. The Olympic Games are supposed to be (as Wikipedia so perfectly says it) “in part, a celebration of the achievements of the human body”. This does not mean, dope yourself up and go beyond what a normal person can do through training.

Mother seeks girl’s womb removal
LONDON, England — A mother is seeking to have the womb of her severely disabled daughter removed to prevent the 15-year-old from feeling the pain and discomfort of menstruation.
Doctors in Britain are now taking legal advice to see if they are permitted to carry out the hysterectomy on Katie Thorpe, who suffers from cerebral palsy — (read full story).
My first reaction to title of this story was, like many of you probably head, was WTF? Who in their right mind wants to take away the womb of their daughter.
Then you read the story.
I used to tell people that they could take away mine so I wouldn’t have to deal with the cramps, the cranky, the headaches. But I knew that is was just part of the whole process. I know why it all happens. But what if you can’t? What if you don’t know what is going on with your body? That is exactly the case in this story. The girl in this story suffers from a severe form of cerebral palsy and has no comprehension at all what happens to her body and why it happens. As her mother said, she would feel the pain, the mood swings, the headaches but have no idea what it is about. Isn’t that the worst fear of everyone? Being in pain and not knowing why?
What do you think about this? Let me know in a comment.
